At least 10 people, including the pilot, were injured when a Boeing passenger plane overran the runway while aborting takeoff from Senegal’s international airport in the outskirts of Dakar on Thursday, the country’s transport minister said. Emergency services were deployed to evacuate the passengers, and those who were injured were receiving medical care, Mr. Ndiaye said. Footage from social media and published by The Associated Press showed passengers going down emergency slides in the dark as one side of the aircraft was in flames. “Our plane just caught fire,” wrote Cheick Siriman Sissoko, a musical artist from Mali, in a post on Facebook, The A.P. He could not be reached by telephone later on Thursday.

SAO PAULO, Nov 3 (Reuters) - Carlos Sainz was fastest in a Ferrari one-two with Charles Leclerc in Friday's sole practice session for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, with other top teams keeping a lid on their true potential. Sainz lapped with a best time of one minute 11.732 seconds, with Leclerc -- polesitter for the past two races -- 0.108 slower and both after late runs on the fastest soft tyres on a windy afternoon. Russell had been top of the timesheets until Ferrari bolted on the soft tyres near the end of the hour. Triple world champion Max Verstappen was only 16th fastest, with Red Bull team mate Sergio Perez 18th but both set their times on the hard tyre. Iran-backed Hezbollah knows this and is keeping Lebanon's crises in mind as it plots the next steps in the conflict with Israel, sources say. As the war between Israel and Hezbollah's Palestinian ally Hamas reverberates across the Middle East, the risk of war between Hezbollah and Israel remains higher than at any point since their last big conflict in 2006. However, Hezbollah has also indicated a readiness for war, reflecting its position as the spearhead of an Iran-backed alliance against Israel and the United States. I’m pro-life. I’ve been involved in the pro-life movement. Since Dobbs, the pro-life movement has lost time and time again at the ballot box. And so, at this point, the pro-life movement is actually under a spotlight to a greater degree than it was. And quite frankly, in many ways, the pro-life movement was not ready for that white hot glare of public attention.

Lawmaker Leonid Slutsky, who early in the 16-month war took part in peace negotiations with Ukraine, said that Russia needs a contract army of at least seven million military and civilian personnel, on top of the current conscript army. He said Wagner fighters can continue fighting with Russian army, go home or go to Belarus. At the end of 2022, Putin backed beefing up the army to 1.5 million combat personnel - including 695,000 contract soldiers - from 1.15 million. Creating a contract army of seven million would require a huge budget allowance. The Russian economy, crippled by the war and subsequent Western sanctions contracted 2.2% percent last year and is expected to rebound only marginally this year.

Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin speaks in this screengrab from a video released on June 24. The Western stakes in the Ukraine war rose significantly as a result. A mutinous weekend that saw mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin flagrantly mock the Kremlin before aborting his march on Moscow evoked Russia’s blood-soaked history of revolutions and coups. The Kremlin strongman seemed to blink at a military confrontation with Prigozhin’s Wagner Group fighters — in an act that might preserve his grip on power. There’s now no doubt that the war Putin unleashed to wipe Ukraine off the map poses an existential threat to his political survival.

Putin confirms Russian pilots killed during aborted mutiny
  + stars: | 2023-06-26 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
June 27 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin on Monday paid tribute to pilots who were killed during the failed weekend mutiny, confirming earlier reports by military bloggers that several planes were shot down by Yevgeny Prigozhin's Wagner militia. "The courage and self-sacrifice of the fallen heroes-pilots saved Russia from tragic devastating consequences," Putin said in his first public address about the mutiny since the weekend events. There has been no official information about how many pilots died or how many aircraft were shot down. Some Russian Telegram channels monitoring Russia's military activity, including the blog Rybar with more than a million subscribers, reported on Saturday that 13 Russian pilots were killed during the day-long mutiny. It was also not clear in what circumstances the aircraft were shot down and pilots killed.

CNN —The world just got a hint of a tantalizing but possibly even more dangerous future without Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Western stakes in the Ukraine war rose significantly as a result. There’s now no doubt that the war Putin unleashed to wipe Ukraine off the map poses an existential threat to his political survival. This would be good news for the West, which has bankrolled and armed the country’s fight for its life. After this weekend, this new reality will require the West to once again examine its balancing act to save Ukraine.

Uber wants to make it "absolutely effortless" for drivers and riders to go green, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said, adding that "everyone should be able to live a low emissions lifestyle. EV 'charging anxiety'Key to Uber's sustainability push is whether it can persuade more drivers to buy or rent EVs. Rider-emissions statistics, carsharing, and sustainable-food packagingIt's not just drivers that Uber is trying to incentivize to go green. Khosrowshahi added that Uber chose London for the launch because it's Uber's EV hub. Of the more than 60,000 Uber drivers using EVs across Europe and North America, over 10,000 were in London, he said.

A FedEx aircraft aborted its landing to avoid a Southwest Airlines jet on Saturday during heavy fog. Both were mistakenly cleared for the same runway at Austin Bergstrom International Airport. "The pilot of the FedEx airplane discontinued the landing and initiated a climb out," said the FAA. "Shortly before the FedEx aircraft was due to land, the controller cleared Southwest Flight 708 to depart from the same runway," the FAA said, per Reuters. Southwest Airlines, FedEx, and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Insider.
(Reuters) - Twitter Inc’s introduction last week of a new subscription system to dole out blue-check verification badges was a flop by any standard. Edelson's preliminary theory: By awarding verification badges to the fake corporate tweeters, Twitter enabled the imposters to trick consumers and even shareholders. (Eli Lilly and Co and Lockheed Martin Corp both experienced sharp, if temporary, stock drops after tweets from corporate accounts that carried the blue-check verification.) Twitter also did not respond to my email query about potential private lawsuits arising from last week’s fake tweets. What about shareholders or consumers who claim to have been duped by tweets from fake corporate accounts?
